February 5th- Simple Bookbinding and the Fine art of Zen “Doodlee Doing”

In this class we will fabricate our own little sketchbook using recycled materials. We will have just enough pages in our books for a Doodle a Day. Doodling and Zen Doodling is an easy and fun mindfulness practice enabling one to work through big decisions, reduce anxiety, and calm the monkey mind, all while embracing the fine art of “loosening up.”

February 12th – All things Colorful and Brush Technique

Who knew there is a science to COLOR? Who knew there are infinite ways to use a paint brush? In this colorful class we will explore the different ways in which the color wheel is our friend. We will learn the fine art of “brushstroke” with different types of brushes and watercolor.  Using watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, and gauche we will learn more about the artistic elements of line, form and color. Wear your favorite color to this class and get ready to create your own rainbow.

February 19th – Sashiko Patch

Sashiko literally means “little stabs” and is a visible form of decorative stitching that began in the 1600’s in Japan. Poor communities, particularly rural ones, lacked the means to buy new clothes, so they repaired clothes and other items with what was available to them.

A needle, thread and fabric scraps! We will create a Sashiko thimble and one or two Sashiko Patches using the Sashiko method of design. A creation to help kick fast fashion to the curb, and recycle, reduce and sustain what you already have!

February 20th- Henri Matisse inspired Still Life Painting.

“There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” ~Matisse

Create a colorful still life on canvas, of a vase holding a bouquet of flowers, start to finish using the techniques of Henri Matisse. Matisse used bold color and loose fantastic pattern to create a joyful and playful tone in his work. We will learn about transfer drawings to canvas, pattern and of course more color.
